Kenyani athlete Maurice Masima has emerged has  emerged as champion of the men's category of the Rock City Marathon 2018, which took place in Mwanza  over the weekend.

Masima clocked 2:19:14 to win the top honour in the 42 km race of the ninth edition of the event, followed by compatriot James Emuria, in the second spot with 2:19:58.

Tanzania's athlete Emmanuel Giniki won the half marathon event, clocking 1:04:09, whereas Kenyan Daniel Kayioki took the second position position with 1:04:47.

Mwanza RC, John Mongella , impressed athletics enethiasist in the region as he, apart from launching the event, took part in the42 km race alongside other seniour government officials including Magu District Commissioner , Dr Philemon Sengati.

Tanzanian Failuna Matanga won the women's half marathon, with Kenyan Beatrice Nyaboke coming second in the race. Winners of the full marathon for both men and women categories were presented with cash prize of 4m/- apiece, the second-placed athletes got 2m/- while the third runners walked away with 1m/- apiece

Apart from praising better organisation of the race  that helped the excel in this year's event, winners said hard work and intensive preparations were crucial for their success.

"The race race's preparations were excellent , with competent athletes taking part in it. I thank God I have won and ensure domestic runners dominate the 21 km race,'' said Giniki.

Speaking during the occasion,  Mongella congratulated participating runners and organizers  and called on sports enthusiasts to join hands to raise the standards of the athletics in Tanzania.

The Rock City Marathon has been held over the past nine consecutive years. Apart from being an avenue to spot and nurture talent, the event complements the Government's efforts to promote tourism specifically in the Lake Zone through athletics, according to the  race's organizing committee chairman , Zenno Ngowi
