Speaking in Mwanza today, RCM Chairperson, Mr Zenno Ngowi said the winners of the full marathon category for both men and women will take home Tshs 4 million each, while the second placed athletes will receive Tshs 2 million while the third placed will earn Tshs 1 million respectively.
"For the Marathon and half marathon categories, prize money will be awarded to the top ten male and female finishers '' he mentioned while adding the 1st place male and female finishers of the 21 km category will receive Tshs 3 million each, with 2nd place getting Tshs 1 million and 3rd place Tshs 750,000 respectively.
Ngowi said winners for the 5 kilometer corporate and albinism race for both men and women will receive certificates of participation while prize money will be rewarded to people with albinism.
"We are expecting that the 5 Kilometer category will also involve the Mwanza RC Mr John Mongella, accompanied by other senior government officials, MPs and corporates including sponsors of the race that are Puma Energy Tanzania, Tiper, Tanapa, Ttb, Nssf, Gold Crest, New Mwanza Hotel, Cf Hospital, CocaCola, Metro Fm, Ef Outdoor, Kk Security, Belmont Fairmount Hotel , Bigie Customs na Global Education Link.,'' he mentioned.
"The winners in the 3 kilometer race for the elderly will receive Tshs 250,000 while the second and third placed athletes in the category will take home cash." He mentioned, while adding that winners of the 2.5 kilometer race for children ages between 7 and 10 years will receive Tshs 50,000.
He mentioned the registration centres for race that are Igoma, Buzuruga, Mwanza Airport, Rock City mall, Saut University, Nyegezi Bus Terminal, Mwanza hotel, Nyamagana Stadium, Dampo and Nyakato
The registration will also feature Geita, Simiyu, Shinyanga and Arusha regional athletic offices, according to the chairperson while adding : "In Dar es Salaam the registration centre is located at Shamo Tower Mbezi beach,'' he mentioned.
The Rock City Marathon has been held over the past nine consecutive years. Apart from being an avenue to spot and nurture talent, the event complements the Government's efforts to promote tourism specifically in the Lake Zone through athletics.
