Dar es Salaam, 19th July 2016 – This year’s Rock City Marathon (RCM) will be officially launched on Tuesday next week in Dar es Salaam, the event’s coordinator Ms. Elizabeth Riziki has said.
In a statement to the media yesterday, Ms. Elizabeth Riziki said organising logistics were almost complete, adding that the launch ceremony will be graced by the Minister for Information, Youth, Sports, and Culture, Mr. Nape Nauye.
The 2016 edition of the marathon will mark the 7th consecutive year since its launch in 2009. The event will be held at the CCM Kirumba Stadium on September 25th, and expected to attract local and international athletes from Africa, Europe and the United States.
Ms. Riziki said the marathon, organized by Public Relations firm Capital-Plus International and sanctioned by Athletics Tanzania (AT) plays a crucial role in marketing the country’s tourism sector through sports.
“We purposely chose the Mwanza region as hosts, because it is home to the Northern Tourism circuit. It has always been a tradition that after the event, participants, especially visitors from abroad sample the various tourism products on offer from the region, such as the beaches along Lake Victoria, as well as the culture, and take game drives to see our wildlife, thereby contributing to our national economy,” said Ms. Riziki.
Ms. Riziki added: “I therefore urge as many Tanzanians as possible to turn out in large numbers to support this noble cause, whose main purpose is to market our tourism products and ensure that we attract even more visitors to our country.”
Also expected at the launch ceremony are officials from AT the National Sports Council among other stakeholders.
The marathon comprises five categories, featuring the main event, a 21 kilometers race for men and women, a 5 kilometers corporate classic race, a 3 kilometer race for people with disabilities, a 3 kilometer race for the elderly who are 55years above, and a 2 kilometer race for children aged between 7 and 10 years.
“The half marathon race, which is the main event will start at the CCM Kirumba Stadium, taking different routes and back to the stadium for the final lap,” said Ms. Riziki.
Rock City Marathon has increasingly gained popularity, and has so far attracted sponsorship from Africa Wildlife Trust, Friedkin Conservation Fund (FCF), Sahara Media Group, Coca Cola and Nyanza Hotel, Nyanza Bottlers.
