About the marathon

The Rock City Marathon (RCM) is an annual event, held in Mwanza, the regional headquarters for the Northern Zone since 2007. The event complements the Government’s efforts to promote tourism specifically in the Northern Region, and nationally, through sports (athletics). RCM is the property of Capital-Plus International (CPI), and endorsed by Athletics Tanzania.

The marathon plays an important role in promoting tourism and regional unity through athletics. The event draws participants from the regional countries of Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda, in addition to Europe, Asia and the USA.

It is held in Mwanza, a major economic hub in the Northern Region, that is also within the country’s Northern Tourism Circuit. After the marathon, local and international participants take time off, to tour and sample tourism products composed of the region’s culture, game tours and beach attractions. These products include, but not limited to: the Saa Nane Island, Ukerewe “dancing rocks”, Lake Victoria rocks and traditional museums.

This year’s event will be special, in the sense that it incorporates the “Okoa Wanyama Wetu, Kataa Ujangili’ campaign that is sponsored by the Africa Wildlife Trust’s (AWT) / Friedkin Conservation Fund (FCF). The campaign is part of activities organised around the world to create more awareness about the elephants poaching crisis.

Unlike previous events, the 2016 marathon has been organised as a family event. It will have a “Nyama Choma Village” set-up at the CCM Kirumba Stadium, where service providers will serve revelers/participants with a variety of delicacies and drinks, with dishes mirroring the culture of the lake region. This will create a carnivore atmosphere which will be spiced-up by live performances from popular local artistes. The event will be held on September 25th, 2016 at the CCM Kirumba Stadium, but preceded by the AWT ‘s “Okoa Wanyama wetu, Kataa Ujangili walk in Dar es Salaam on 24th September 2016.
